Abstract | |||
A population-based case-control study focusing on women under the age of 45 was conducted, with a major emphasis on defining risk in relation to use of oral contraceptives, dietary patterns early in life, and alcohol consumption. The study was conducted in three study areas: Seattle, WA, Atlanta, GA, and five counties of central New Jersey. A number of analyses from this study have been completed. Some of the more notable findings have related to oral contraceptives, with current usage, particularly of high estrogen/progestin dose pills, being related to risk of early-onset cancers. Alcohol usage was also found to increase risk, particularly for advanced tumors, suggesting a possible promotional role. Obesity was found to be inversely related to risk among these younger women. The Seattle component of the study involved collection of blood samples from selected study subjects. This has enabled evaluation of risk in relation to hormone measurements and certain growth factors, such as leptin and c-peptide. |
